Why the ratios differ

Different planetary gear sets inside the transmission, plus different quantities of friction and steel plates, serve the different torque capacities. There are four different planetary gear ratios in the 722.6. Fitting the wrong drum or piston — for example a 4-cylinder set behind a 12-cylinder engine — causes premature failure (ATSG)

Solenoids

Six solenoids mounted on the electronic conductor plate and the valve body, under two white plastic covers. Earlier valve bodies do not have the covers: they were added to protect the electrical connections from shorts created by metal particles in the fluid, and they are not available separately for retrofit (ATSG)

Fluid level control

A float integral to the valve body assembly is positioned so that it can plug the opening between the transmission sump and the gearset chamber, so the rotating gear sets do not foam the fluid, aerate it or force it out of the breather (ATSG)

Speed sensors

Two input speed sensors, N2 and N3, with an ATF temperature versus resistance characteristic used for diagnosis (ATSG)

Driving programs

Two driver-selectable programs: S for standard and W for winter. Winter gives a second-gear start and a higher reverse ratio; standard gives a first-gear start and a lower reverse ratio (ATSG)

The transmission designation number is etched into a raised boss on the left side of the transmission case; on Mercedes vehicles it is matched to the engine size, which determines the gear ratio and clutch capacity of the unit (ATSG)
