Transmission type

Six-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transaxle. Three brake clutches, two driving clutches and one one-way roller clutch operate three planetary gear sets to give six forward ratios and one reverse.

Family and naming

The A6 family is named by engine size and torque capacity: A6GF1, then A6MF1 and A6MF2, then A6LF1, A6LF2 and A6LF3. The A6GF1 and A6MF1 with a plastic oil pan share the same torque converter clutch solenoid, which differs from the one used on the steel-pan units.

Identification

The transmission number is etched into the case next to the VIN tag. Numbers beginning NA are the A6GF1, BA the A6LFx and EA or FA the A6MFx

Solenoids

All linear solenoids measure 5.1 ohms; the on/off solenoid measures 10 to 11 ohms. Torque converter clutch solenoid supply is pin 10 of the pass-through connector, ground controlled through pin 2

Pressure taps

There is a pressure tap for each clutch assembly plus converter clutch apply (DA) and release (DR) taps and two reducing pressure taps (RED 1 and RED 2). RED 1 is the solenoid supply pressure to shift solenoids A and B and the pressure switch valves; RED 2 supplies the remaining solenoids. Dodge publishes RED 1 at 73 to 75 psi and RED 2 at 79 to 81 psi for the 6F24 version of this unit

Known weak points

3/5/reverse and underdrive pressure control valve bore wear — slips, flares, bind-ups, no forward, no reverse, erratic shift timing, ratio codes and burned 3-5-R or UD clutches. Overdrive pressure control valve bore wear — 4-5-6 slip, gear ratio codes, pressure control out-of-range codes and a burned overdrive clutch. Pressure regulator bore wear — soft and inconsistent shift feel, burnt clutches and overheating. The valve that supplies the reducing pressure taps is also prone to elongating its bore, which produces solenoid performance or gear ratio codes.

Service requirement

TCM learning is required after transaxle or TCM replacement or a TCM upgrade, and after shift shock or flare. The fluid temperature must be between 60 and 115 °C (140 and 239 °F) throughout the relearn procedure. Apart from the 1-2 shift all the shifts are synchronised, which is why the relearn matters.
